Apple and Star Trek inspired the neat, interactive, and clean design and UX/UI for this coffee machine!

Posted: 09 Jun 2021 03:07 AM PDT

I love coffee, I love Apple and I love Star Trek, and thereby I love the Elemental coffee machine because it combines ‘elements’ from them all! The sleek machine has a silhouette of an espresso group-head with an intuitive modern touch interface. The clean form is a nod to how easy it is to use and a freshly brewed pot of coffee is still the center of attention here.

Torres takes a very stripped-back, modernist approach, with nothing hidden in terms of the machine’s function. You can see everything you need to make a good cup of coffee which adds clarity to the simple form. The interface is completely touch-based and therefore the UI had to be intuitive while still communicating movement as well as a sense of urgency. The UI is a homage to the ‘okudagrams’, an loving name given to the interactive and usually re-organizable displays found on control panels and computer interfaces in 23rd and 24th-century starships. It started with Star Trek and then spread to every sci-fi thing ever. The idea of integrating it here was to alleviate the comparatively long time it takes for filter coffee to brew, it almost gives the illusion that more is happening than there actually is.”I wanted to avoid the basic – almost traditional at this point – style of touch UI so I went with more of a sci-fi theme inspired by TNG LCARS, but actually, you know – usable,” says Torres.

The conceptual coffee maker also incorporates a digital scale to the hopper lid and a simple twist will push the beans into the grinder. The latch would also have a switch to activate the grinder and the cover has to be shut in order to complete the circuit. There is a sneaky little MacPro reference in the internal compartments because it looked much neater than bare PCBs and offered more protection from any potential leaks. The intricate grooves on the dripper were an attempt to avoid having a sprinkler in order to distribute the water evenly to the coffee grounds. The heating element is also woven into this section to prevent hot water from needing to be pumped up the exposed pipe and potentially causing a safety hazard.

“There was limited capacity for physical prototyping, so CAD + simulation software was used to quickly iterate and solve problems with the design. Surprisingly, this actually worked fairly well, at least in this case. Blender mantaflow simulations were used on the CAD models were used to help drive the water channels and filter arrangement,” explained Torres. Now, all I can think of is getting a good cup of coffee and watching sci-fi movies.

Meet the Totem lamp that can be used individually or stacked together to light up any space!

Posted: 09 Jun 2021 02:16 AM PDT

Life in a rental apartment has its cons but one thing that comes to my rescue each time is to set up our lighting! Lighting can make or break a space and a modular solution like Totem Lamp is a solution we all need as it presents a modular solution – adaptable to each room we have.

Inspired by the Native American Totem Pole, the Totem Light is made up of individual light modules that can be used together by stacking on top of each other as a floor lamp. The individual modules can be hanged from the ceiling or even used as a table lamp. Made of hand-blown glass, each module of the light carries a unique texture that makes the lamp literally stand out and shine.

The textured glass brings to mind a reflective surface, where the evening lights shimmer gently each night. Minimal, hand-crafted, modular, and functional – the lamp is the perfect lighting solution and the only limitation is your imagination!

This transforming robotic furniture going from bed to home office desk is the 2021 investment we need!

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 09:17 PM PDT

This past year has seen some pretty innovative work from home office solutions. Space-saving answers to tight office corners like desk setups that double as workout stations and retractable office cubicles that lean on a modular design to keep your living spaces decluttered only just scrape the surface of what we've seen thus far. Sustainable furniture design studio Ori adds a WFH apparatus called the Cloud Bed to the mix, merging an office and desk setup with a cantilevered lofted bed that descends to the floor to really hone in the mutability of working from home.

In its initial form, the Cloud Bed features a working desk and table beneath a lofted bed. Built for hospitality interiors and personal spaces, this space-saving work from home solution was designed to cover a small footprint inside the home. UL certified to ensure the bed remains lofted and close to the ceiling during working hours, the desk area folds into itself, merging with the floor as the bed descends from its raised position. While it might be tempting to hop up to the top of the bunk bed and sleep from such a high height, the Cloud Bed, Table Edition comes equipped with an internal mechanism that lowers the bed to the floor once the workday is done. With the push of a button, the mattress and wooden bed frame lower down from its elevated post in time with the desk folding inwards toward the floor. Requiring a minimum ceiling height of eight feet, six inches, the Ori Cloud Bed was designed to be integrated into smaller living spaces to make the most out of the space we have for working from home.

No one likes working in the same room we sleep in, let alone eat in. Without losing any living space, the Cloud Bed can come in either Queen or King sizes with a built-in table that sits up to five people. The Cloud Bed, Table Edition also comes outfitted with storage space, three outlets, voice and phone controls, as well as dimmable LED lights.

Presenting as an office desk for the home, Ori’s Cloud Bed doubles as a WFH solution and cantilevered bed.

Once the bed is lowered down, no trace of the office desk can be found.

Raised above the desk, the lofted bed requires a minimum height of 8’6″.

Designed as a hospitality and space-saving solution, the Ori Cloud Bed can fit into hotels as well as office spaces.

The Ori Cloud Bed appears as a contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired bed frame when lowered down.

When the Cloud Bed is raised to its top height, the integrated desk can sit up to five people.

Integrated motors and internal monitor systems ensure the steady descent and ascent of the Cloud Bed.

Can your Bluetooth speaker UV sanitize and wirelessly charge your smartphone? This one can.

I usually have mixed feelings on products that end up doing more than is required of them, but MyStation makes a pretty compelling case. Designed as a 3-in-1 desktop accessory, MyStation can wirelessly charge your smartphone and AirPods and even has a built-in UV sanitizing chamber… all while being a Bluetooth speaker with powerful 360° audio.

Styled like a modern desktop organizer, MyStation handles its multiple roles seamlessly. Fitted with 2 5W speakers that shoot audio sideways in a 360° array, it works wonderfully as a desktop speaker for work, a Bluetooth speaker for music, or even a conferencing speaker. The device’s upper surface works as a 10W wireless charging station with a built-in display that even has clock, alarm, and notification functions. Serving as a Bluetooth audio device, MyStation even lets you accept or reject calls, increase or decrease volume, and play and pause music using controls located on the upper surface.

Lift the MyStation’s lid and it reveals the charging + sanitation station below. The device’s inner compartment is big enough to fit your smartphone, TWS earbuds, a smartwatch, or even other EDC items like your keys, mask, etc. The compartment comes with a specially calibrated UV-C light that can sanitize your devices, obliterating 99.9% of any germs or microorganisms on them. While your gadgets are being sanitized, MyStation can charge them too. The base of the compartment comes with 2 additional charging coils (10W and 5W), as well as a USB-A port to plug in a charging cable for your smartwatch. While your devices are sanitizing on the inside, the screen on the top displays a UV sign with a countdown that lets you know when the sanitation cycle is complete. MyStation’s long list of features can all even be controlled by its companion smartphone app called the MyKronoz. The app, which is available on both Android and iOS devices, lets you start/stop sanitizing cycles, check whether your devices are charging, control music playback, and even set alarms.

MyStation is pretty unique in the fact that it’s perhaps the only product in its category. Its hybrid nature combines 3 products (speaker, charger, sanitizer) into a single device, making it an all-purpose device that’s perfect for your workspace, kitchen counter, mantelpiece, or even bedside table. Moreover, it builds on the recent success of products like the Oblio – a UV-sanitizer and wireless charger that went on to win a Red Dot Design Award, a CES Innovation Award, and was even declared one of 2020’s Best Innovations by TIME Magazine.

The most important and sacred space in our home is our bedroom! It’s our happy place, a space where we can simply sprawl on our bed and de-stress after a long day of adulting. My bedroom is quite honestly my favorite place and my ultimate safe haven. However, in our modern urban homes, with their limited amount of space, it can be a task to do up our bedroom exactly the way we want to! But that doesn’t mean we do not try. Here’s a collection of inspiring and gorgeous bedroom designs that will surely prove to be major interior goals for you! These comforting and minimal bedroom designs will get you motivated to give your bedroom the makeover it truly deserves. Enjoy!

Every bedroom deserves its privacy, after all, it is the place where you can let yourself be. Vasyl Ambroziak's bedroom visualization gives you this privacy but without the boring walls! Using a glass wall to partition between the bedroom and the raw concrete exterior wall, Vasyl adds an explosion of green in place of a boring old wallpaper. In fact, as the plants change with the season, you get a unique backdrop and of course the calmness of being surrounded by such a green space.

This glass-enclosed bedroom at the Eco House Merisi in Adjara, Georgia has breathtaking views of mountains clad in snow! It is the coziest little bedroom ever. You can literally take a nap amongst the mountains in here!

Designed by Amin Moazzen, this ‘Room full of Love’ features a floor-to-ceiling window behind the bed, which then extends into a gorgeous skylight! Flowers have been embedded in the floor around the bed, creating an intimate and warm space that would be the perfect personal haven.

Using wooden paneling to create a geometric contrast, this interior design by Max Shpak, Roman Kravchenko, Vladyslav Hreben, Alexander Lukyanenko, and Lena Sever's Berlin House is a bright airy space without being overly feminine.

The Juniper Room at The Whisper Rock Ranch is a beautiful space that features the natural stones of the site. Views of the Californian desert, comfortable seating and wooden interiors give a raw and rustic theme to the bedroom!

Designed by Makhno Studio, this matte black and minimal room is major bedroom goals! Textured wooden flooring and a jet-black bed are accentuated by an intriguing wallpaper. It looks like a super stylish man cave!

Andrea West rekindles our love for accent walls with this dark accent wall that actually helps to highlight the bed with its blond headboard!

This is another stunning bedroom at the Eco House Merisi in Adjara, Georgia. This all wooden bedroom features mesmerizing views of the snow-clad mountaintops, as well as a super tempting jacuzzi!

Designed by Charlotte Taylor and Nicholas Préaud, this beautiful bedroom in Casa Atibaia in São Paulo is a prime specimen of Brazilian modernism. It’s a warm and open space highlighted by stonework, plants, and soft subtle colors. It attempts to be a living space that co-exists with nature, rather than encroaching upon it.

A high vaulted ceiling, a wooden pedestal that stretches up to the ceiling in an unbroken line, and the subtle light underneath the bed – this bedroom interior by Taras Kaminskiy & Veronika Mulieieva named Urban Jungle has tranquility. The light under the bed makes the bed almost levitate, inducing a calming effect the moment you step into this room, draining away all your worries.

Lamborghini built a stunning life-size replica of its Sian FKP 37 out of 400,000 LEGO bricks

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Designed over a period of 8,660 hours with more than 400,000 bricks, this Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is the closest thing to the real deal! Earlier last year, Lamborghini and LEGO co-created a 1:8 replica of the Sian car… This year, they pushed the limits to build this incredibly realistic beast that looks stunningly like the original (in both shape and size) and weighs a mind-numbing 2.2 metric tonnes!

This breath-takingly realistic car was created by a team of 15 people who put over 8000 hours of work into recreating the automotive beauty. The car was built meticulously out of LEGO Technic pieces, and barring the wheels and the logo on front, practically the entire vehicle is made solely from LEGO bricks. In fact, even the headlights, taillights, and the light-strips running along the side are LEGO pieces!

This one-of-a-kind project required 154 different types of Lego pieces, including 20 made specifically for the project, Lamborghini mentioned in a press release. Instead of using solid pieces, the car showcases panel-work comprising interlocking hexagonal pieces, paying a hat-tip to Lamborghini’s recurring use of hexagonal patterns and elements in their design language. The result is extremely lifelike, and matches the original Sian’s sizes perfectly, albeit weighing a ridiculous 4,850 pounds. As a tribute to the 1:8th model that kickstarted this journey to begin with, the larger LEGO variant is spray-painted in the same acid-green UV-coated color finish, applied at Lamborghini’s own paint shop.

The interiors are stunningly lifelike too, with every element of the dashboard, seats, and the steering wheel built out of LEGO parts (finally with the Lamborghini logo being inlaid into the wheel). Sadly, the doors don’t open, but the windows give one a glimpse into the incredibly detailed interiors. The car finally rests on real Lamborghini wheels, as used in the original Sian.

The original Sian is touted as Lamborghini’s most powerful production car ever made. It’s also the company’s first hybrid, comprising a naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 and an electric motor, giving it a total of 807 horsepower, 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, and a top speed of over 217 mph. The Sian’s name literally translates to “flash” or “lightning,” explaining why the LEGO replica comes with lightning bolt-shaped elements on its side. After the Sián was announced, Lamborghini added the suffix FKP 37 to its name as an homage to Ferdinand Karl Piëch, former head of Volkswagen Group, Lamborghini’s parent company. The 37 denoted his birth year, 1937.

One could argue that this LEGO Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is even rarer than its original. It’s built as a one-off piece that’s likely to exist only as an exhibit. You can, however, buy the 1:8th LEGO Technic replica online.

This tactical pocket neck knife EDC brings self-protection + utility to any cutting tasks

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 10:46 AM PDT

TOPS Knives know their exploits when it comes to knives – giving EDC enthusiasts exactly what they desire. As an everyday carry, knife is one tool virtually everyone needs – every once in a while. The smaller and easier it is to carry, the better it is. While many multi-tool EDC's do have a knife tool – having one that is sharp as a sword, and maintaining a very small footprint is certainly a lucrative proposition. Meet the TOPS ALRT 01, a.k.a. The Anywhere Last Resort Tool which is a reliable EDC for anything from self-defense to conquering irks that come up every now and then.

The EDC maker has crafted the tactical knife to be a surprise self-protection tool and a utility knife that'll never let your down. It can be worn as a neck knife, keychain or hung around the car's steering column for iffy situations. The small knife has a hollow in middle to act as a grip for holding while also shedding the extra weight to keep it feather-light. Grip serrations, known as jimping, are there to provide extra grip – which is great. This in a way reminds me of the Japanese Kiridashi – thus I can bank on the woodworking and bamboo crafting abilities of the ALRT 01.

Being pocket-sized makes this knife so much practical as an EDC – ready to jump in to use when needed. It is crafted from 1095 carbon steel with a black traction coating on top to prevent rust. Of course, to carry it in your backpack or when not in use, it needs to be shielded. Therefore, the accessory comes with an equally slim scabbard. So, this EDC is for people who want a no-nonsense tactical knife that can get them through chalk and cheese!

This portable treehouse trailer hooks onto a bike, making it the ultimate solo outdoor escapade!

Posted: 08 Jun 2021 04:40 AM PDT

Talk about a treehouse and the first thing that comes to mind is a wooden structure erected around a solid tree. Then shift your thought towards a camper that is towed behind a vehicle. Combine these both in their smallest form possible and you get this portable treehouse. The unique creation christened Tree Trailer by Henry K. Wein, a design student at the Design Academy Eindhoven, is a house on wheels like none other. The one-man treehouse can be towed behind a bicycle or a motorcycle, and when the time comes to set camp, simply mount it on a solid tree branch with the trunk acting as the other support. When mounted to a tree, it makes me think about the idea of vertical camping – wherein tents are pitched hanging from vertical cliffs!

Henry created this amazing DIY camper from repurposed parts – such as the cladding made out of a salvaged house blind. The rest of it is made from wood and a supporting metal beam. For an airy feeling (for claustrophobic people) the portable treehouse comes with opening windows on the sides and a fixed glass window on top. While on the inside there is only enough space to toss and turn during sleep, it is far better than setting camp on the ground. Remember those times when on a camping trip the bugs and insects were a nightmare during sleep.

The DIY is worth all the appreciation and Henry will surely improve it in the future to make it more durable and worthy of long adventure trips. Probably having a pop-up style camper addition would be great, and the front section could be closed off securely to avoid dust or other things entering the sleeping area. That said, the Tree Trailer portable treehouse takes you much closer to nature – whether it be on the road or enjoying pristine views on a hilltop. Just imagine hanging from a tree – with nothing but you and the elements!
